Target recalls Up & Up baby wipes over bacterial contamination

Summary

Target voluntarily recalled two lines of its Up & Up baby wipes after FDA testing found antibiotic‑resistant Burkholderia bacteria, urging consumers to stop use and return the products.

Target announced a voluntary recall of its Up & Up brand baby wipes on June 4 after the U.S. Food and Drug Administration detected antibiotic‑resistant Burkholderia cepacia complex and Burkholderia gladioli in the products. The recall covers both fragrance‑free and Fresh Cucumber scented wipes sold in stores and online, packaged in plastic pouches of various sizes. FDA testing was prompted by customer complaints of discoloration and skin or eye irritation, and the agency confirmed the presence of the bacteria, which can cause serious infections in newborns, infants, immunocompromised individuals and people with chronic lung conditions. While healthy individuals are unlikely to be affected, the bacteria can lead to bloodstream infections, sepsis or pneumonia in vulnerable groups. Consumers are instructed to stop using the wipes immediately and return them to any Target location for a full refund. > "We care deeply about the safety of our guests and our products. Out of an abundance of caution, Target has voluntarily recalled Up & Up Fragrance Free Baby Wipes and Up & Up Fresh Cucumber Baby Wipes," a Target spokesperson said. The company provided a toll‑free number for further assistance.
