In a decisive move against the reactionary foreign policy of the Trump administration, the House has approved a bipartisan bill to provide critical aid to Ukraine and impose sanctions on Russia, with a vote of 226 to 195. Notably, 18 Republicans broke ranks with their party’s leadership, joining nearly all Democrats to pass the Ukraine Support Act, championed by Rep. Gregory Meeks of New York, a consistent advocate for international solidarity and democracy.
The legislation authorizes $8 billion in loans for Ukraine and NATO allies through the Foreign Military Financing program, along with over $1 billion in additional funding for Ukraine, Baltic security, and Radio Free Europe—an important step in countering authoritarian disinformation. The bill now faces potential obstruction in the Senate, where the Republican majority may attempt to block this vital support for a nation resisting imperialist aggression.
Earlier this week, four Republicans also joined Democrats in passing a resolution against President Trump’s reckless military actions in Iran, highlighting a growing, if fragile, bipartisan consensus in opposition to endless war and authoritarian overreach. The Trump administration has failed to facilitate genuine negotiations between Ukraine and Russia, with Secretary of State Marco Rubio admitting that talks have stalled. Trump’s disparaging remarks about Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, contrasted with his praise for Vladimir Putin, reveal a disturbing alignment with autocratic regimes.
After the vote, Democrats reaffirmed the United States’ commitment to standing with Ukraine in its fight against Russian imperialism, while Rep. Carlos Gimenez, one of the Republican supporters, condemned Putin’s invasion as a destructive and criminal act. This bill marks a crucial step in resisting both domestic and foreign authoritarianism.
