Trump hints UFC lighting structure may remain at the White House

President Trump recently suggested that the UFC lighting structure, referred to as "The Claw," might remain on the South Lawn of the White House beyond the upcoming fight scheduled for June 14. In a TikTok video, he likened the grid to the Eiffel Tower, which was intended to be dismantled after the World’s Fair in 1889 but ultimately stayed due to its popularity. Trump remarked, "We’re building something in front of the White House that’s quite attractive to a lot of people," hinting at the possibility that the structure may never be taken down.

The implications of maintaining The Claw are significant, as its presence disrupts normal operations on the South Lawn, including the typical landings of Marine One. Trump has had to use alternative routes for his transportation. Moreover, the South Lawn is often utilized for various large-scale events.

This move would not be unprecedented for Trump, who has made numerous controversial modifications to the White House and its grounds. His alterations include paving the Rose Garden and embellishing the Oval Office, as well as initiating a campaign to update elements of Washington, D.C. for the America 250 celebration.

The UFC, which is financing the event and related construction with an estimated total cost of $60 million, is also responsible for replacing the grass on the South Lawn, with UFC CEO Dana White noting that this alone will cost around $700,000 due to the anticipated damage. He expressed the sentiment, "Because we’re going to f**k up the South Lawn, $700,000 just to replace the grass."
