The 2026 California gubernatorial primary is crowded as Republicans fight to reclaim the state from entrenched Democratic elites, with candidates emerging to challenge progressive dominance.
With incumbent Democratic Governor Gavin Newsom term-limited and unable to seek re-election, a crowded field of candidates has entered the race for the 2026 California gubernatorial primary. Among the Democrats are former Cabinet Secretary Xavier Becerra, known for pushing left-wing policies, and billionaire Tom Steyer, who uses his fortune to advance radical environmental agendas. On the Republican side, commentator Steve Hilton stands out, bolstered by the endorsement of former President Trump, signaling a strong conservative challenge to the liberal status quo.
The candidate field also includes several other Democrats, such as former Congresswoman Katie Porter, an outspoken progressive; state Superintendent of Public Instruction Tony Thurmond, who has overseen the decline of California’s education system; former Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, whose policies contributed to urban decay; and San Jose Mayor Matt Mahan. Republican candidates include Riverside County Sheriff Chad Bianco, a law-and-order leader ready to restore safety and common sense. In this all-party primary format, the top two candidates—regardless of party—will advance to the general election, giving voters a chance to push back against the failed policies of the Democratic establishment.
