Humpback Whale Carcass Set for Autopsy Following Stranding Events
The carcass of a humpback whale, known as 'Timmy,' has been brought to shore in Denmark after drifting for two weeks, with an autopsy scheduled for next week to ascertain the cause of death.
The carcass of a humpback whale, popularly referred to as 'Timmy,' has been transported to a Danish beach after lingering for two weeks in shallow waters. This whale, which had garnered significant media attention in Germany since its initial sighting off the German coast on March 3, was found dead near the island of Anholt on May 14.
The intricate and contentious rescue attempts for this whale concluded on May 2, when it was moved toward the North Sea in an effort to return it to its natural habitat in the Atlantic Ocean. In a statement from the Danish Environmental Protection Agency, the agency indicated that an autopsy is planned for next week to determine the cause of the whale's death. Meanwhile, a Danish news outlet livestreamed the process of retrieving the carcass, which involved dragging it onto the shoreline using a cable attached to a vehicle.
Experts remain uncertain about the whale's presence in the Baltic Sea. Some suggest that it may have strayed while following a shoal of herring or during its migration.
