Meta lays off over 2,200 employees at Menlo Park headquarters
In its latest round of layoffs, Meta plans to terminate 2,212 positions at its Menlo Park headquarters as part of a larger initiative to cut 8,000 jobs globally, primarily impacting software engineering roles.
Meta announced significant layoffs impacting its Bay Area workforce, with over 2,200 employees at its Menlo Park headquarters set to be separated as part of a broader initiative to cut 8,000 jobs worldwide. The layoffs come as the company shifts its focus toward artificial intelligence, particularly affecting software engineers who work on its main platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp.
Additional WARN filings indicated cuts at other locations, including 313 jobs in Sunnyvale and 74 in Playa Vista, Los Angeles County. Positions in teams related to AI products, such as BizAI and Core Ads, have been particularly affected. The company continues to restructure its Reality Labs division, facing challenges in the virtual reality market, prompting further staff reductions.
The layoffs were communicated to employees on May 20 and will be effective by July 22, with severance packages offering 16 weeks of base pay plus an additional two weeks for each year of service, as stated by Meta spokesperson Tracy Clayton. In an email, Clayton highlighted that the restructuring includes a mix of layoffs and role closures, aimed at aligning the workforce with critical business priorities.
Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg addressed the decision in a staff memo, emphasizing that these changes would position the company competitively in the AI sector. While he expressed hope for future success, he acknowledged past communication failures regarding such strategic moves. Zuckerberg indicated that there would not be further companywide layoffs for the remainder of the year, although he did not rule out additional changes entirely. This marks the third round of job cuts for Meta this year, following earlier reductions in January and March.
