Summary

Former California attorney general Xavier Becerra maintains a lead in recent polls for the upcoming governor's primary, while the race for second place remains competitive.

Xavier Becerra continues to lead the California governor's race ahead of the primary elections, according to two recent polls. The latest Berkeley-Los Angeles Times poll shows Becerra with 25% support, followed by Steve Hilton at 21% and Tom Steyer at 19%.

Jim Newton, a public policy professor at UCLA, commented on the race dynamics, noting that Steyer's focus on Becerra may be misplaced as he needs to surpass Hilton to advance. Hilton has been attempting to persuade Riverside County Sheriff Chad Bianco to withdraw from the race, as Bianco’s support has decreased from 16% to 11% in the new poll.

Steyer has invested significantly in his campaign, contributing over $216 million of his own funds. Newton added that the political climate in California reflects a strong aversion to Republican ideologies, largely influenced by sentiments towards former President Trump. He observed that while Hilton may benefit from Trump's endorsement, it could also hinder his chances in the long term. In comparison to previous polls, Katie Porter has seen her support drop from 13% to 7%. Becerra campaigned in Palm Springs on Friday.
