Polling Indicates Strong Competition Among Democrats for California Governor
A recent poll shows Xavier Becerra leading in the California governor race, followed closely by Steve Hilton and Tom Steyer, indicating a potential for two Democrats to advance to the general election.
Xavier Becerra has emerged as the frontrunner in the California gubernatorial race, according to a poll from the UC Berkeley Institute of Governmental Studies. The poll indicates that Becerra is closely followed by Steve Hilton and Tom Steyer, with their support reflecting a shift in voter preferences after former Rep. Eric Swalwell's withdrawal from the race.
Mark DiCamillo, the poll director, noted that the current survey highlights the consolidation of Democratic support around Becerra, while Hilton benefits from increased backing among Republicans, notably after receiving an endorsement from former President Donald Trump. The poll suggests Steyer remains a viable contender, trailing Hilton by just five points and Becerra by eight points, although earlier figures from another poll indicated larger gaps.
Support for other candidates, such as Riverside County Sheriff Chad Bianco and former Rep. Katie Porter, has diminished. DiCamillo remarked on the difficulty candidates have in recovering from declining numbers at this stage in the campaign. The competitive landscape has resulted in a fragmented Democratic field, with significant spending influencing the race. Steyer has contributed $213 million to his campaign, while a super PAC has spent $34 million opposing him.
Democrats who previously worried about the possibility of both Hilton and Bianco advancing to the general election are now less concerned. The poll shows that Trump’s endorsement has motivated 37% of GOP voters to support Hilton. However, Democratic voter turnout is reportedly lower than in previous elections, potentially complicating the dynamics as 7% of voters remain undecided. Hilton currently leads among those who have already voted, capturing 29% support compared to Becerra's 20% and Steyer's 17%. DiCamillo highlighted that supporters of Bianco favor Hilton as their second choice, which could benefit him further as the election approaches.
