Teenager Charged in Cruise Ship Death Granted Temporary Release

Summary

A federal judge has permitted a 16-year-old charged with the murder and sexual assault of his stepsister on a Carnival Cruise ship to remain free as the court considers his custody status.

A federal judge in Miami has temporarily allowed 16-year-old Timothy Hudson, charged with the sexual assault and murder of his stepsister, to remain free while deliberating on custody details. Initially arrested as a juvenile, Hudson was placed under electronic monitoring with his uncle. However, following the transfer of his case to adult court, prosecutors sought his detention until trial.

After a recent hearing, U.S. Magistrate Judge Edwin Torres decided to seek further information from the U.S. Marshals Service regarding Hudson's potential detention closer to his family in central Florida. The judge did not indicate when a final decision would be made, allowing Hudson to leave the courthouse without being taken into custody.

Hudson has pleaded not guilty to charges of first-degree murder and aggravated sexual abuse. His stepsister, 18-year-old Anna Kepner, was found deceased on the Carnival Horizon ship, where the family was traveling in November. An investigation revealed she died from mechanical asphyxia, with her body hidden under a bed in their shared room.

Kepner’s father has expressed hope in the judicial process to uncover the truth and remarked on the profound pain experienced by the family during this complex situation. Anna Kepner was remembered by family and friends as a vibrant high school cheerleader, with a memorial service encouraging attendees to wear bright colors in tribute to her spirit.
