The US military has conducted airstrikes targeting Iranian missile sites and boats in southern Iran, specifically near Bandar Abbas, a strategic port city. US Central Command stated that the strikes were executed in "self-defense" to safeguard American troops from perceived threats posed by Iranian forces.
Central Command spokesperson Captain Tim Hawkins emphasized that the military aims to protect its personnel while exercising restraint in light of the ongoing ceasefire. Meanwhile, Iranian foreign ministry spokesman Esmail Baqai noted some advancements in negotiations with the US but underscored that an agreement to resolve the conflict is not imminent.
Despite President Donald Trump's previous comments suggesting proximity to a deal, he later instructed negotiators not to expedite the process. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio indicated that an agreement might be on the horizon. However, Baqai clarified that while significant progress has been made, no one can assert that a deal is immediately forthcoming. The situation remains complex, with both US and Iranian forces adhering to a ceasefire since early April, amid continued tensions over control in the Strait of Hormuz.
