Suspect Fatally Shot After Firing Near White House Security Checkpoint

Summary

A man opened fire near a White House security checkpoint and was fatally shot by Secret Service officers; a bystander was also injured.

On Saturday evening, a man opened fire near a White House security checkpoint at 17th Street and Pennsylvania Avenue NW. Secret Service officers returned fire, striking the suspect, who was later pronounced dead at a hospital. A bystander was also injured during the exchange; it remains unclear whose gunfire caused the injury. President Donald Trump was in the White House at the time but was not affected. The suspect was identified as 21-year-old Nasire Best, who had a prior arrest in July 2025 for attempting to enter a different White House checkpoint without authorization and exhibiting erratic behavior. This incident marks the third occurrence of gunfire near the president in the past month, following events at the White House Correspondents' Association Dinner in April and near the Washington Monument earlier in May. The FBI is assisting in the ongoing investigation.
