Humpback Whale Found Dead Off Danish Coast After Rescue Effort
A humpback whale, previously stranded off Germany's Baltic Sea coast and released into the North Sea, has been found dead near Denmark's Anholt island.
A humpback whale that had been stranded off Germany's Baltic Sea coast and subsequently released into the North Sea has been found dead near Denmark's Anholt island. Danish authorities confirmed the identification through a tracking device attached during the rescue operation.
The whale, nicknamed "Timmy" and "Hope," was initially spotted near Germany's Baltic Sea coast on March 3, far from its typical Atlantic habitat. After multiple stranding incidents and unsuccessful attempts to guide it to deeper waters, a private initiative transported the whale via barge and released it into the North Sea on May 2.
On May 14, the whale's carcass was discovered off Anholt island in the Kattegat strait, approximately 70 kilometers from its release point. Jane Hansen, head of division at the Danish Environmental Protection Agency, stated, "It can now be confirmed that the stranded humpback whale near Anholt is the same whale that was previously stranded in Germany and was the subject of rescue attempts."
The rescue operation had garnered significant public attention and debate, with experts expressing concerns about the whale's health and the stress of repeated interventions. The cause of death remains uncertain, and authorities have advised the public to maintain a safe distance from the carcass due to potential health risks.
