Israel Strikes Syrian Forces Near Suweida Amid Sectarian Clashes
Israel has launched airstrikes on Syrian government forces near Suweida following deadly clashes between Druze militias and Bedouin tribes, as Syrian authorities announce a ceasefire and seek to restore order in the region.
Israeli forces have conducted airstrikes against Syrian government troops and military equipment near the city of Suweida, following the deployment of Syrian forces into the predominantly Druze area after two days of intense sectarian violence. The clashes, which began on Sunday, have reportedly resulted in about 100 deaths, including Druze fighters, Bedouin tribesmen, and security personnel.
The fighting was reportedly triggered by the robbery and abduction of a Druze merchant, escalating into armed confrontations between Druze militias and Bedouin tribes. Druze fighters seized a Bedouin-inhabited neighborhood, and violence soon spread to surrounding villages. Efforts at mediation led to a temporary release of hostages, but hostilities resumed, with reports of drone and mortar attacks in the region.
On Tuesday, Syria's defence minister announced a ceasefire and stated that an agreement had been reached with local leaders for security forces to restore order in Suweida. He said, "Suweida neighbourhoods will be under the control of Internal Security Forces as soon as combing operations are completed in order to control the chaos, secure return of residents to their houses."
Despite the ceasefire announcement, some Druze leaders called for continued resistance, accusing government forces of violating the agreement. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defence Minister Israel Katz said they had ordered strikes to prevent Syrian forces and weapons from being used against the Druze population. They stated that Israel is committed to protecting the Druze in Syria due to historical and familial ties with the Druze community in Israel and the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights.
The Syrian government has not issued an immediate response to the Israeli strikes. The situation remains tense as authorities attempt to stabilize the area and prevent further escalation.
