Navy Jets Collide at Idaho Air Show; Crew Members Eject Safely

Summary

Two U.S. Navy EA-18G Growler jets collided during the Gunfighter Skies Air Show at Mountain Home Air Force Base in Idaho; all four crew members ejected safely and are in stable condition.

During the Gunfighter Skies Air Show at Mountain Home Air Force Base in Idaho, two U.S. Navy EA-18G Growler jets from the Electronic Attack Squadron 129 at Whidbey Island, Washington, collided midair. The incident occurred around 12:10 p.m. MDT on Sunday, May 17, 2026. All four crew members ejected safely and are reported to be in stable condition.

The collision prompted an immediate lockdown of the base and the cancellation of the remainder of the air show. Emergency responders were dispatched to the scene, and an investigation is underway to determine the cause of the crash.

Videos captured by spectators showed the two aircraft making contact, spinning together, and eventually exploding upon impact after the crew had ejected. Experts noted that the unusual way the aircraft stayed conjoined midair likely allowed time for the crew to eject safely.

The Gunfighter Skies Air Show was being held for the first time in eight years. In 2018, a hang glider pilot died in an accident at the event, and in 2003, a Thunderbird jet crashed during the show, though the pilot was able to eject safely.

The Mountain Home Police Department issued a notice that the air show was canceled and cautioned people not to travel to the area.
