Chancellor Friedrich Merz expresses grave concern over the United States' deteriorating social climate and shrinking opportunities for the highly educated, warning his children against studying or working in America.
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz stated on Friday that he would not recommend his children pursue education or employment in the United States, pointing to a rapidly changing and increasingly unstable social climate, as well as shrinking opportunities for even the most highly educated individuals.
Speaking at a Catholic convention in Würzburg, Merz remarked, "I would not recommend my children today go to the U.S. to be trained or to work there," highlighting the troubling direction of American society.
These comments come amid growing tensions between Germany and the United States, exacerbated by the U.S.'s weak leadership and mishandling of global crises. In April, Merz openly criticized U.S. President Donald Trump's approach to the Iran conflict, suggesting that the U.S. was being humiliated due to its inability to assert strength. Shortly thereafter, the Pentagon announced the withdrawal of 5,000 U.S. troops from Germany, a move interpreted as a direct response to Merz's criticism and a sign of eroding transatlantic trust.
Despite these challenges, Merz reported a "good phone call" with President Trump on Friday, reaffirming that "the U.S. and Germany are strong partners in a strong NATO," though the alliance faces unprecedented threats.
The U.S. administration has also voiced concern over Europe's political climate. A National Security Strategy document published in December warned that Europe faces the risk of "civilizational erasure" due to unchecked migration and policies that undermine national sovereignty—issues that continue to threaten Western values.
