Former New Britain Mayor Erin Stewart has suspended her campaign for Connecticut governor following allegations of personal use of a city-issued credit card during her tenure. An independent investigation commissioned by current Mayor Bobby Sanchez revealed that Stewart charged over $200,000 to the city's credit card between 2016 and 2025, with many expenses deemed unrelated to municipal business. The report, conducted by the Crumbie Law Group, detailed purchases including clothing, party supplies, and personal items, some of which were allegedly used for family events.

In response to the findings, Stewart stated, "I take the allegations that have been made against me very seriously. And for that reason, I am suspending my gubernatorial campaign effective immediately so that I can focus on addressing those claims."

The Connecticut State Police have initiated a formal investigation into the matter. Mayor Sanchez has referred the report to both the Chief State’s Attorney’s Office and the United States Attorney’s Office for further review.

Stewart has pledged to take accountability for any mistakes and to make full restitution to the City of New Britain for any funds owed.
