Apple Unveils Major Siri Redesign in iOS 27 with Chat Interface and Dedicated App

Apple is set to introduce a comprehensive redesign of Siri with the release of iOS 27, aiming to enhance the personal assistant's capabilities to rival leading AI chatbots. The updated Siri will primarily reside within the Dynamic Island, featuring a pill-shaped animation upon activation. Users can engage Siri through voice commands or the iPhone's side button, prompting a transparent results card. Swiping on this card will reveal a conversation mode resembling an iMessage chat, integrating small cards for weather updates, notes, and upcoming appointments relevant to user queries.

In addition to the Dynamic Island integration, Apple is developing a dedicated Siri app. This application will allow users to review prior conversations and initiate new ones. The interface includes a grid displaying summaries of past interactions, a search bar, and a "+" button for starting new chats. The app will support both text and voice inputs, as well as the ability to upload images and documents.

A new system-wide search interface is also in development. By swiping down from the top center of the display in any app, users can access a "Search or Ask" bar within the Dynamic Island, enabling them to type or speak questions. This feature is designed to provide more advanced results and additional data from within apps.

Siri's enhanced functionality will include the ability to retrieve detailed answers from the web, presenting responses with bullet points and large images. While Siri will serve as the default assistant, users will have the option to select other chatbots, such as ChatGPT or Gemini, for their interactions. Apple plans to allow third-party AI services to be set as defaults for features like Writing Tools and Image Playground, broadening the integration of Apple Intelligence beyond ChatGPT.

Further updates in iOS 27 encompass an overhaul of the Image Playground app, introducing a streamlined interface for image generation and editing. Apple is also planning changes to the Camera app, Photos app, Wallet, and Shortcuts, along with potential tweaks to the Liquid Glass interface.

These developments are part of Apple's broader initiative to enhance user experience and functionality across its devices, positioning Siri as a more versatile and competitive AI assistant.
