President Trump Proposes Federal Gas Tax Suspension Amid Rising Fuel Prices
President Donald Trump has proposed suspending the federal gasoline tax to alleviate the burden of rising fuel prices on Americans, a move that requires congressional approval.
President Donald Trump announced plans to suspend the federal gasoline tax to help Americans cope with surging fuel prices resulting from the ongoing conflict with Iran.
The federal gasoline tax is currently set at 18.4 cents per gallon for gasoline and 24.4 cents per gallon for diesel fuel, generating over $23 billion annually for federal highway and public transit programs.
As of Monday, the average national gas price was $4.52 per gallon, a significant increase from just under $3 per gallon before the conflict began.
Suspending the federal gas tax requires congressional approval. In response to the president's proposal, Republican Senator Josh Hawley of Missouri announced plans to introduce legislation supporting the tax suspension.
However, Senate Majority Leader John Thune expressed reservations, noting that suspending the gas tax could create a significant shortfall in the Highway Trust Fund, which finances infrastructure projects.
Industry groups have also raised concerns that suspending the tax could increase the federal deficit and may not result in full savings being passed on to consumers.
The administration has previously taken steps to address rising fuel costs, including releasing oil from the U.S. Strategic Petroleum Reserve and easing sanctions on certain oil shipments.
The proposal to suspend the federal gas tax comes amid ongoing debates over the economic impact of the conflict with Iran and its effect on global oil markets.
