President Trump Proposes Federal Gas Tax Suspension Amid Rising Fuel Prices
President Trump has proposed a temporary suspension of the federal gasoline tax to alleviate the impact of surging fuel prices on American consumers.
President Donald Trump announced plans on Monday to seek a temporary suspension of the federal gasoline tax in response to escalating fuel prices. The national average for gasoline has risen to $4.52 per gallon, a significant increase from approximately $3 per gallon prior to the conflict with Iran.
The federal gasoline tax, currently set at 18.4 cents per gallon, contributes over $23 billion annually to the Highway Trust Fund, which finances highway and public transit programs. Suspending this tax requires congressional approval, as the president lacks the authority to enact such a measure unilaterally.
In a CBS News interview, President Trump expressed his support for the suspension, stating, "I think it's a great idea. Yup, we're going to take off the gas tax for a period of time, and when gas goes down, we'll let it phase back in."
Lawmakers from both parties have proposed similar measures to provide relief to consumers facing high fuel costs. However, some officials have expressed concerns about the potential impact on infrastructure funding.
The administration has also explored other strategies to mitigate rising fuel prices, including releasing oil from reserves and easing certain sanctions. Despite these efforts, fuel prices continue to climb, prompting consideration of additional measures such as the proposed tax suspension.
