Putin Signals End to Ukraine Conflict Amid Ceasefire and Victory Day Observance
Russian President Vladimir Putin indicates the Ukraine war is nearing its conclusion, coinciding with a three-day ceasefire and scaled-back Victory Day celebrations in Moscow.
Russian President Vladimir Putin stated on May 9 that the conflict in Ukraine is approaching its end, aligning with a three-day ceasefire from May 9 to May 11. This truce, announced by U.S. President Donald Trump, includes a suspension of hostilities and a prisoner exchange of 1,000 detainees from each side.
The ceasefire coincides with Russia's Victory Day, commemorating the Soviet Union's triumph over Nazi Germany. This year's observance in Moscow was notably subdued, with the traditional military parade on Red Square significantly reduced due to security concerns. Instead of showcasing military hardware, a video of Russia's military operations was displayed on large screens.
Putin expressed willingness to negotiate new security arrangements for Europe, suggesting former German Chancellor Gerhard Schröder as a preferred interlocutor. He attributed the conflict's origins to Western leaders' actions, accusing them of attempting to draw Ukraine into the European Union's sphere of influence.
The war, ongoing for over four years, has resulted in significant casualties and strained Russia's economy. Despite the ceasefire, both sides have previously accused each other of violations during similar truces. The current pause is viewed as a temporary humanitarian measure rather than a step toward a comprehensive peace agreement.
