Former Spirit Airlines Pilots Assist in Relocating Grounded Fleet to Storage

Summary

Following Spirit Airlines' abrupt shutdown, former pilots are aiding in ferrying the airline's aircraft to storage facilities, providing them with temporary employment and closure.

After Spirit Airlines ceased operations on May 2, 2026, former pilots have been employed to relocate the airline's aircraft to storage facilities. Nomadic Aviation Group, specializing in aircraft ferrying services, has engaged these pilots to move the grounded fleet to desert storage locations.

Bob Allen, Managing Partner of Nomadic Aviation Group, stated that utilizing former Spirit pilots not only offers them immediate employment but also provides a sense of closure. He noted that the abrupt closure of an airline can be emotionally challenging for staff, and participating in the final flights can help them transition to the next phase of their careers.

The relocation process involves coordinating with local airports and obtaining necessary authorizations from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). The aircraft are being moved to storage facilities such as Goodyear Airport (GYR) and Pinal Airpark (MZJ) in Arizona, chosen for their favorable climate conditions for aircraft preservation.

Spirit Airlines' shutdown left approximately 91 aircraft stranded at 26 airports across the United States. The swift relocation of these planes is crucial to avoid accumulating parking fees at major airports and to prepare the aircraft for potential future use or sale.

In addition to providing employment opportunities for former Spirit pilots, Nomadic Aviation Group is offering support through its AI-based networking app, Kittyhawk, to assist aviation professionals in finding new opportunities within the industry.
