Apple's iPhone 18 and 18e to Share Components, Indicating Specification Convergence
Recent reports suggest that Apple's upcoming iPhone 18 and the lower-cost iPhone 18e will share interchangeable components, signaling a narrowing of differences between the two models.
Apple's forthcoming iPhone 18 and the more affordable iPhone 18e are expected to share several interchangeable components, according to recent reports. This development suggests a reduction in the specification differences between the two models.
A source known as "Fixed Focus Digital" indicated that certain parts are interchangeable between the iPhone 18 and iPhone 18e, based on information from a reliable manufacturing source. The leaker stated that this component overlap confirms a measurable convergence in specifications at the supply chain level. They added that the standard iPhone 18 model has been downgraded and its launch delayed, a decision that is final and will not change.
The iPhone 18 is now anticipated to launch in spring 2027, rather than alongside the Pro models in the fall. This shift would position September and October as the "flagship season" for Apple, featuring the iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max, and the foldable "iPhone Ultra." A staggered release strategy separating the Pro and standard models has been reported since last year, with analysts such as Ming-Chi Kuo and Nikkei corroborating the plan.
Previous reports from "Fixed Focus Digital" suggested that Apple is implementing manufacturing downgrades to the iPhone 18 as a cost-cutting measure, affecting both display specifications and the chip. Engineering Validation Testing for the iPhone 18 and iPhone 18e is reportedly scheduled to occur simultaneously in June, aligning with the notion that the two devices now share significant engineering overlap.
Currently, the iPhone 17 and iPhone 17e differ notably: the standard model features a 6.3-inch display with ProMotion and up to 3,000 nits of peak outdoor brightness, the Dynamic Island, a five-core GPU, an Ultra Wide camera, and significantly better battery life. In contrast, the iPhone 17e has a smaller 6.1-inch display, a notch instead of a Dynamic Island, no ProMotion, a four-core GPU, and no Ultra Wide camera. If Apple is now sharing components between the iPhone 18 and iPhone 18e and reducing display and chip specifications on the standard model, many of these distinctions could diminish or disappear entirely in the next generation.
The iPhone 18, iPhone 18e, and iPhone Air 2 are all expected to launch in spring 2027, with the iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max, and iPhone Ultra anticipated to be announced in the fall.
