Search Continues for Two U.S. Soldiers Missing Off Morocco's Coast

Summary

Two U.S. Army soldiers are missing after attempting a rescue off Morocco's southern coast during a training exercise; search efforts are ongoing.

Two U.S. Army soldiers are missing off Morocco's southern coast following a rescue attempt during a recreational hike near the Cap Draa Training Area. According to defense officials, one soldier fell into the Atlantic Ocean, prompting nearby service members to form a human chain using their belts in an unsuccessful rescue effort. Subsequently, another soldier, aware that the fallen comrade could not swim, jumped into the water to assist but was immediately struck by a wave. A third soldier also entered the water but was unable to rescue the others and managed to return to shore safely.

The incident occurred during African Lion, an annual multinational military exercise involving over 7,000 personnel from more than 30 countries. The exercise, led by U.S. Africa Command (AFRICOM), aims to enhance regional security cooperation and military readiness. The current edition began on April 20 and is scheduled to conclude on May 8.

Search and rescue operations have been underway for three days, involving multiple aircraft, drones, divers, and vessels along Morocco's southern coast. The U.S., Moroccan, and other participating forces are coordinating efforts to locate the missing soldiers.
