EU's Kallas Urges Stronger European Defense Amid U.S. Troop Withdrawal
EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas emphasizes the need to bolster Europe's defense capabilities following the U.S. decision to withdraw 5,000 troops from Germany.
The United States has announced plans to withdraw approximately 5,000 troops from Germany within the next six to twelve months, a move that has prompted calls for enhanced European defense efforts.
EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas expressed surprise at the timing of the announcement, stating, "There has been discussion for a long time about the possible withdrawal of US troops from Europe. However, the timing of this announcement comes as a surprise."
Kallas emphasized the necessity for Europe to strengthen its role within NATO, noting that American troops are present in Europe to protect both European and American interests.
The Pentagon's decision follows a comprehensive review of the Department's force posture in Europe, considering theater requirements and conditions on the ground.
The withdrawal comes amid tensions between U.S. President Donald Trump and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, particularly after Merz criticized the U.S. approach to the conflict with Iran.
When asked whether the troop withdrawal was intended as a punitive measure against Merz, Kallas declined to speculate, stating, "I cannot look into Trump's head... he would have to explain the decision himself."
