The Metropolitan Police announced that Essa Suleiman, a Somalia-born British citizen from Camberwell, south London, faces two counts of attempted murder and one count of possessing a bladed article in a public place in connection with the attack on Wednesday. Additionally, Suleiman has been charged with attempted murder related to a separate incident earlier that day in south London. He has been remanded in custody and is scheduled to appear at Westminster Magistrates' Court on Friday.
The victims, identified as 34-year-old Shloime Rand and 76-year-old Moshe Shine, were hospitalized following the attack. Rand has since been discharged, while Shine remains in stable condition.
Authorities have labeled the Golders Green attack as a terrorist incident. The Counter Terrorism Policing unit is leading the investigation.
It has been revealed that Suleiman was referred to the government's Prevent program in 2020, which aims to deter individuals from engaging in extremism. His case was closed within six weeks.
In response to the attack, Prime Minister Keir Starmer pledged to enhance security measures for Jewish communities and reaffirmed the government's commitment to combating antisemitism.
