Israel Intercepts Gaza-Bound Aid Flotilla, Detains Activists

Summary

Israeli forces intercepted a flotilla carrying aid to Gaza in international waters near Crete, detaining approximately 175 activists and sparking international criticism.

Israeli naval forces intercepted a flotilla of 22 boats carrying humanitarian aid to Gaza in international waters near Crete, detaining approximately 175 activists. The Global Sumud Flotilla (GSF), which departed from Barcelona on April 12, aimed to break Israel's blockade of Gaza. The interception occurred over 600 miles from Gaza, prompting GSF organizers to denounce the action as "piracy" and an "unlawful seizure of human beings on the open sea near Crete."

Israel's Foreign Ministry described the flotilla as a "PR stunt" and stated that the operation was conducted lawfully to prevent a breach of the blockade. The ministry also reported finding materials such as drugs and contraceptives on board the vessels.

Among the detained activists, two individuals—Saif Abu Keshek, a Palestinian-Spanish citizen, and Thiago Ávila, a Brazilian citizen—were taken to Israel for questioning. Israeli authorities suspect Abu Keshek of affiliation with a terrorist organization and Ávila of illegal activity, though no evidence has been publicly released. The remaining activists were released in Greece.

The interception has drawn international criticism. Amnesty International called for the immediate release of the detained activists, emphasizing that they should be treated humanely and protected from ill-treatment.

This incident follows a similar interception in October 2025, when Israeli forces stopped a previous GSF flotilla from reaching Gaza, arresting and deporting more than 470 people on board, including Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg.

The GSF's stated objectives include challenging Israel's blockade, advocating for a permanent humanitarian corridor, and increasing international pressure on entities complicit in enforcing the blockade.

Israel maintains that its actions are in accordance with international law and necessary for security reasons. The Foreign Ministry stated that the operation was carried out peacefully and without casualties.
