LIV Golf Faces Uncertain Future as Saudi Funding Ends After 2026

Summary

LIV Golf's primary financial backer, Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund, will cease funding after the 2026 season, prompting the league to seek new investors and consider reunification with the PGA Tour.

LIV Golf's future is in question following the announcement that Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund (PIF) will end its financial support after the 2026 season. The PIF, which has invested over $5 billion into LIV Golf since its inception in 2022, cited a shift in its investment strategy as the reason for the decision.

In response, LIV Golf has restructured its board, appointing Gene Davis as the new chairman and Jon Zinman to the leadership team. The league is now focused on diversifying its funding sources and securing long-term partners. Despite the financial uncertainty, LIV claims that most of its teams are on track for profitability this year and has attracted five tournament sponsors.

The funding cut has led to speculation about the potential reunification of LIV Golf players with the PGA Tour. President Donald Trump expressed support for such a move, stating,

"I do believe that all of the golfers should be playing against each other. They were viewing something as a monopoly, but it’s swaying away. It should be the opposite of a monopoly."

He emphasized the importance of top players competing together, referencing the success of the Masters tournament where players from both tours participated.

LIV Golf has also postponed its inaugural tournament in Louisiana, originally scheduled for June 25–28, 2026. The league cited factors such as peak summer heat, a crowded global sports calendar, and course readiness as reasons for the delay. The event is expected to be rescheduled for later in the fall.

As LIV Golf navigates this transitional period, the professional golf landscape remains in flux, with players and stakeholders closely monitoring developments.
