The Norwegian Nobel Committee has received 287 nominations for the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize, comprising 208 individuals and 79 organizations. Committee Secretary Kristian Berg Harpviken noted a significant turnover in candidates compared to previous years, stating, "Since I am new in the job, one of the things that has to some extent surprised me is how much renewal there is from year to year on the list."
Despite a global increase in conflicts, Harpviken emphasized the continued relevance of the award: "The Peace Prize is even more important in a period like the one we're living in. There is as much good work, if not more, than ever."
While the committee does not disclose nominee names, leaders from Cambodia, Israel, and Pakistan have reportedly nominated former U.S. President Donald Trump. These nominations, submitted before the January 31 deadline, remain unverified due to the 50-year confidentiality rule governing the nomination process.
Among other potential nominees are U.S. Senator Lisa Murkowski and Danish Parliament member Aaja Chemnitz, recognized for their efforts in promoting peaceful development in the Arctic region. Norwegian lawmaker Lars Haltbrekken, who nominated them, stated, "Together they have worked relentlessly to build trust and to secure a peaceful development of the Arctic region over many years."
The Nobel Peace Prize laureate will be announced on October 9, with the award ceremony scheduled for December 10.
