At least 29 people were killed in an attack on a football match in Guyaku village, Adamawa State, Nigeria. The assault occurred on Sunday evening when gunmen opened fire on spectators and players gathered at a local football pitch.
Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri visited the scene on Monday, confirming the death toll and condemning the attack as "tragic and unacceptable."
The Islamic State group claimed responsibility for the attack in a statement on the Telegram messaging app.
This incident is part of a broader pattern of violence in Nigeria's northeast, where jihadist groups have been active for over a decade.
In a separate incident on the same day, gunmen raided an orphanage in Kogi State's capital, Lokoja, abducting 23 children. Fifteen have since been rescued, and efforts are ongoing to secure the release of the remaining eight victims.
These attacks underscore the ongoing security challenges in Nigeria, particularly in the northern regions, where insurgent activities and kidnappings for ransom have become increasingly common.
