Florida Governor Proposes Redistricting Plan Potentially Increasing GOP House Seats

Résumé

Governor Ron DeSantis has introduced a new congressional map that could provide Republicans with up to four additional U.S. House seats, pending legislative approval.

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has unveiled a proposed congressional redistricting plan that could potentially increase Republican representation in the U.S. House by up to four seats. The plan is set to be reviewed during a special legislative session commencing Tuesday.

The proposed map indicates 24 Republican-leaning districts and four Democratic-leaning districts, a shift from the current composition of 20 Republican and seven Democratic seats, with one seat recently vacated. DeSantis stated, "Our new map for 2026 makes good on my promise to conduct mid-decade redistricting, and it more fairly represents the makeup of Florida today."

This initiative aligns with former President Donald Trump's call for Republican-led states to redraw districts ahead of the midterm elections. However, the effort may encounter legal challenges, as Florida's constitution prohibits redistricting plans "with the intent to favor or disfavor a political party or an incumbent."

Democratic leaders have criticized the proposal. Nikki Fried, chair of the Florida Democratic Party, labeled the redistricting effort as "unconstitutional gerrymandering." Conversely, Evan Power, chair of the Republican Party of Florida, supports the new map, stating, "When they draw compact districts, we're going to get a lot more Republicans here in Florida."

The special session was initially scheduled for April 20 but was postponed by a week. In addition to redistricting, the agenda includes discussions on easing school vaccine requirements and regulating certain uses of artificial intelligence products.

The path to implementing the new districts is complex. While the U.S. Supreme Court has ruled that mid-decade redistricting is permissible, Florida's constitutional provisions against partisan gerrymandering present potential legal obstacles.

The outcome of this redistricting effort could significantly influence the balance of power in the U.S. House, especially as the midterm elections approach.
