President Trump Considers Government Acquisition of Spirit Airlines Amid Financial Struggles
President Donald Trump is contemplating a government purchase of Spirit Airlines to stabilize the financially troubled carrier and preserve jobs.
President Donald Trump announced on Thursday that his administration is considering acquiring Spirit Airlines, aiming to stabilize the financially troubled carrier and preserve approximately 14,000 jobs.
"We're thinking about doing it, helping them out, meaning bailing them out, or buying it," Trump stated. "We'd be getting it virtually debt-free. They have some good aircraft and good assets."
Spirit Airlines has faced significant financial challenges, including two bankruptcy filings since late 2024. The airline's struggles have been exacerbated by rising jet fuel costs and a failed merger with JetBlue Airways, which was blocked on antitrust grounds in 2024.
The administration is reportedly in advanced discussions over a federal bailout package for Spirit, potentially involving a $500 million loan in exchange for a significant government stake in the airline.
However, the proposal has met with bipartisan skepticism. Republican Senators Ted Cruz and Tom Cotton, along with Democratic Senator Elizabeth Warren, have expressed concerns about the wisdom of investing taxpayer money into a struggling business.
Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy also questioned the viability of such an intervention, stating, "What we don't want to do is put good money after bad, and there's been a lot of money thrown at Spirit, and they haven't found their way into profitability."
Despite the opposition, President Trump remains open to the possibility, emphasizing the potential to resell the airline once market conditions improve. "If we could get it for the right price, I'd do it, to save the jobs," he said.
The administration continues to deliberate on the best course of action, weighing the potential benefits of preserving jobs and maintaining competition in the airline industry against the risks of government intervention in a private enterprise.
