Apple Reportedly Plans Cost-Cutting Measures for iPhone 18

Summary

Apple is rumored to implement cost-cutting measures in the upcoming iPhone 18, potentially affecting display and chip specifications.

Apple is reportedly planning to implement cost-cutting measures in its upcoming iPhone 18, potentially affecting both display and chip specifications. According to information from the leaker known as "Fixed Focus Digital," the standard iPhone 18 may experience downgrades that align it more closely with the lower-cost iPhone 18e model. These changes are said to be part of a broader strategy to reduce manufacturing expenses.

The leaker suggests that the iPhone 18's display specifications will be downgraded, resulting in lower screen quality. Additionally, the manufacturing process itself is expected to "take a step backward," which could impact both the chip and the precision of display production. This move would bring the iPhone 18 technically closer to the less expensive iPhone 18e, which was previously positioned as a scaled-down version.

For comparison, the current iPhone 17 features a 6.3-inch display with ProMotion (120Hz refresh rate) and a peak brightness of up to 3,000 nits outdoors. ProMotion was one of the most important upgrades of the iPhone 17, enabling smooth 120Hz display performance for the first time on the standard model. If Apple does indeed downgrade the display specifications, several scenarios would be possible:

  • Returning to 60 Hz instead of ProMotion would make the device feel noticeably more sluggish.
  • Lower peak brightness – less readable in direct sunlight.
  • Simpler manufacturing process – possibly an LTPS display instead of LTPO OLED.
  • Lower resolution or pixel density – less sharp image.

The leak does not specify which of these areas are affected. However, the phrase "step backward" suggests a fundamental decline in manufacturing quality, not just a minor refinement.

In terms of the device's chip, the leaker indicates that the iPhone 18's chip will also be more aligned with the iPhone 18e. Even though iPhone 17 and iPhone 17e both have an A19 chip, the 'e' model comes with a binned version. It offers only four working GPU cores, while iPhone 17 has five. If a downgrade truly is coming, the A20 chip will still almost certainly be better than last year’s A19, but perhaps with a bigger drop in performance compared to A20 Pro than we might normally expect.

These reported changes are part of Apple's strategy to maintain the iPhone 18's price point amid rising component costs. By aligning the standard iPhone 18 more closely with the iPhone 18e, Apple aims to offer a more affordable device while preserving profitability. The leaker also confirms that the iPhone 18 Pro isn’t expected to be hit by these cost-cutting measures. So if you’re a Pro user, you have nothing to worry about.

The standard iPhone 18 is expected to launch months after the iPhone 18 Pro models as part of an all-new split launch strategy. Apple's usual fall iPhone announcement is expected to include the iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max, and the so-called foldable "iPhone Ultra." The iPhone 18e, iPhone 18, and iPhone Air 2 will likely follow in the spring of 2027.

As with all leaks and rumors, these reports should be taken with caution until official information is released by Apple.
