Trump Considers Potential Deal with Anthropic for Department of Defense AI Use
President Trump indicates possible agreement with Anthropic to integrate AI models into the Department of Defense, following prior disputes over usage restrictions.
President Donald Trump indicated the possibility of an agreement allowing Anthropic's artificial intelligence models to be utilized by the Department of Defense. In a recent interview, Trump stated, "They came to the White House a few days ago, and we had some very good talks with them, and I think they're shaping up." He added, "They're very smart, and I think they can be of great use."
This development follows earlier tensions between the Pentagon and Anthropic. In March, the Department of Defense labeled Anthropic a supply chain risk, citing concerns that the company's technology could threaten U.S. national security. Consequently, defense contractors were required to certify that they did not use Anthropic's AI models in their military work. Additionally, President Trump ordered all federal agencies to cease using Anthropic's technology, stating that his administration would "not do business with them again."
Despite these challenges, recent interactions suggest a potential thaw in relations. Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei met with senior administration officials, including White House Chief of Staff Susie Wiles and Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, to discuss the company's new AI model, Mythos. A White House spokesperson described the meeting as "productive and constructive." Anthropic has been engaging in ongoing discussions with U.S. government officials about Mythos, which has advanced cybersecurity capabilities.
The Pentagon's initial designation of Anthropic as a supply chain risk stemmed from the company's refusal to grant unrestricted access to its AI models for all lawful military purposes. Anthropic sought assurances that its technology would not be used for fully autonomous weapons or domestic mass surveillance. The failure to reach an agreement led to the Pentagon's decision to label the company a risk.
The recent meetings and statements from President Trump indicate a potential shift towards collaboration, as both parties explore ways to integrate Anthropic's AI capabilities into national defense while addressing ethical and security concerns.
