Jewish Leaders Condemn IDF Soldier's Desecration of Jesus Statue in Lebanon
Over 150 Jewish leaders from various denominations have condemned an Israeli soldier's destruction of a Jesus statue in southern Lebanon, calling it a desecration and apologizing to the global Christian community.
More than 150 Jewish leaders worldwide have condemned an Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) soldier's destruction of a Jesus statue in southern Lebanon, describing the act as a desecration and extending apologies to the global Christian community.
The incident occurred in the Christian village of Debel, where a photograph circulated online showing an IDF soldier using a sledgehammer to damage the statue. The IDF confirmed the image's authenticity and stated that the soldier's behavior was wholly inconsistent with the values expected of its troops.
In response, Jewish leaders from Orthodox, Conservative, and Reform denominations signed a letter organized by Israel365 Action, an organization that fosters Jewish-Christian relations. The letter labeled the act as a desecration of God's name and an affront to Christian communities worldwide. It emphasized that such behavior contradicts Jewish values and the principles upon which the State of Israel was founded.
The signatories acknowledged the potential damage to Jewish-Christian relations and expressed regret that many Israelis are unaware of the appreciation many Christians have for Israel and the Jewish people. They apologized to the Christian community and reaffirmed their commitment to respecting all holy places and sacred symbols, as demanded by the Torah.
The IDF has taken disciplinary action against those involved. The soldier who damaged the statue and another who photographed the incident have been removed from combat roles and sentenced to 30 days of military detention. Six other soldiers present during the incident will face future command-level disciplinary actions.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu condemned the act, stating he was stunned and saddened by the incident. He assured that harsh action would be taken against the offender and emphasized Israel's commitment to tolerance and mutual respect among all faiths.
The IDF is collaborating with the local Christian community to restore the damaged statue, underscoring its commitment to respecting religious symbols and places of worship.
