US Navy Seizes Iranian Cargo Ship Near Strait of Hormuz Amid Rising Tensions
The U.S. Navy has seized an Iranian-flagged cargo ship near the Strait of Hormuz, escalating tensions as a ceasefire between the U.S. and Iran nears expiration.
The U.S. Navy has seized the Iranian-flagged cargo ship Touska near the Strait of Hormuz, marking the first direct enforcement of a U.S.-led blockade of Iranian ports. The USS Spruance intercepted the vessel in the Gulf of Oman after it attempted to bypass the blockade. Despite multiple warnings over several hours, the Touska refused to comply, prompting the Spruance to disable the ship by firing into its engine room. U.S. Marines subsequently boarded and took control of the vessel.
Iran condemned the seizure as an act of "maritime piracy" and a violation of the existing ceasefire, which is set to expire in the coming days. Iranian officials have vowed retaliation, further straining diplomatic efforts aimed at resolving the ongoing conflict.
The incident has also impacted global oil markets, with prices surging approximately 6% following the seizure. Brent crude reached $95.42 per barrel, while U.S.-based WTI rose to $89.77, reflecting market anxiety over potential disruptions in the vital shipping route.
As the ceasefire nears its expiration, diplomatic efforts continue. Vice President JD Vance is scheduled to travel to Islamabad, Pakistan, for critical talks with Iranian officials aimed at negotiating an end to the conflict. However, the recent escalation casts doubt on the prospects for a peaceful resolution.
