Ukraine Deploys Robots and Drones to Capture Russian Positions Without Infantry

Ukrainian forces have achieved a significant milestone by employing unmanned ground robots and drones to capture Russian positions without direct infantry involvement. In a recent operation, two Russian soldiers surrendered to these unmanned systems, which were remotely controlled by Ukrainian operators stationed miles away from the front lines.

Mykola "Makar" Zinkevych, commander of the "NC13" unit within Ukraine's Third Separate Assault Brigade, reported that the position was secured without a single shot being fired. He noted that this operation marked the first instance where enemy positions were overtaken, and prisoners captured, solely by ground robots and drones, without infantry participation.

The Ukrainian military has been increasingly integrating land drones into their operations. Initially used for tasks such as casualty evacuation and resupply, these unmanned systems are now conducting combat assault missions. Land drones offer advantages over larger military vehicles due to their lower visibility and ability to operate in various weather conditions while carrying substantial payloads. They also boast greater durability and longer battery life compared to aerial drones.

Zinkevych emphasized the strategic importance of this technological advancement, stating that Ukraine must leverage technology to compensate for its numerical disadvantage against Russian forces. The current objective is to replace a third of infantry with drones and robots within the year.

President Volodymyr Zelensky highlighted the impact of these unmanned systems, revealing that over 22,000 missions have been conducted in the past three months alone. He noted that each mission represents a life saved, as robots are deployed into the most hazardous areas instead of human soldiers.

The Ukrainian military's focus on unmanned systems has been further intensified with the appointment of Mykhailo Fedorov as defense minister. Fedorov, previously the minister of digital transformation, has introduced a war plan that heavily emphasizes technology and data. This strategy involves collaboration with numerous companies on drone development and production initiatives, aiming to use data and technology to identify and intercept aerial threats in real time and create a "kill zone" along the front line where drones and robots operate continuously.

Analysts suggest that Ukraine's advancements in drone and robotic warfare are contributing to the stalling of Russian advances and facilitating Ukrainian counterattacks. The Institute for the Study of War assessed that Ukraine's mid-range strike campaign has allowed Kyiv to regain the upper hand, though the challenge remains to stay ahead as Russia responds.

Ukraine's expertise in drone warfare is also attracting international attention. President Zelensky has engaged with Middle Eastern countries, offering to share Ukraine's experience in exchange for support, including resources like missiles for air defenses. This exchange underscores the global interest in Ukraine's innovative approaches to modern warfare.

While Ukraine is making strides in developing and training AI models for unmanned systems using real battlefield data, there is caution regarding fully autonomous technologies. Zinkevych stressed that the final decision must always be made by a human, expressing concerns about the ability of artificial intelligence to distinguish between friend and foe and the potential for malfunctions.

Reflecting on the rapid technological advancements, Zinkevych remarked that what once seemed like science fiction is now a reality. He advocates for the accelerated development and large-scale implementation of robotic ground systems on the battlefield, emphasizing that human life is priceless, whereas robots do not bleed.
