Eight Children Killed in Shreveport Domestic Shooting; Suspect Dead

Summary

A man in Shreveport, Louisiana, fatally shot eight children, including seven of his own, and wounded two women before being killed by police.

In Shreveport, Louisiana, a tragic incident unfolded early Sunday morning when 31-year-old Shamar Elkins fatally shot eight children, seven of whom were his own, and wounded two women, including his estranged wife. The victims, aged between 3 and 11 years, were found in two residences within the Cedar Grove neighborhood. One child was discovered deceased on the roof, apparently attempting to escape, while another survived by jumping off.

Following the shootings, Elkins fled the scene, carjacked a vehicle, and led police on a pursuit into Bossier City, where he was shot and killed by officers. Authorities believe the violence was domestic-related, as Elkins and his wife were in the process of separating and were scheduled for a court hearing.

Shreveport Mayor Tom Arceneaux described the event as "a tragic situation - maybe the worst tragic situation we've ever had." The community has responded with grief and support, holding a vigil for the victims.

This incident marks the deadliest mass shooting in the United States since January 2024.
