U.S. Navy Seizes Iranian Cargo Ship Amid Escalating Tensions in Strait of Hormuz

The U.S. Navy has seized the Iranian-flagged cargo ship Touska in the Gulf of Oman, marking a significant escalation in the ongoing tensions over the Strait of Hormuz. The guided-missile destroyer USS Spruance intercepted the Touska as it attempted to breach the U.S. naval blockade of Iranian ports. After multiple warnings went unheeded, the Spruance disabled the vessel by firing into its engine room, rendering it inoperable.

"The Iranian crew refused to listen, so our Navy ship stopped them right in their tracks by blowing a hole in the engineroom," President Donald Trump stated on social media.

The Touska, previously sanctioned by the U.S. Treasury for alleged illicit activities, is now under U.S. custody. Marines from the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit boarded the vessel following its disablement.

In response, Iran has condemned the seizure as an act of "maritime piracy" and a violation of the ceasefire, vowing swift retaliation. The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) has declared the Strait of Hormuz closed to all vessels until the U.S. lifts its blockade on Iranian ports.

The incident has had immediate economic repercussions. Oil prices surged by approximately 6%, with Brent crude reaching $95.42 per barrel and U.S. crude climbing to $89.77. This escalation threatens to deepen the global energy crisis and complicates ongoing diplomatic efforts. The current ceasefire is set to expire on Tuesday night, with U.S. negotiators planning to meet Iranian counterparts in Islamabad. However, Iran has yet to confirm its participation, expressing skepticism about the talks.

The Strait of Hormuz, a critical chokepoint through which about 20% of the world's oil passes, remains a focal point of geopolitical tensions. The recent developments underscore the fragile nature of the ceasefire and the potential for further escalation in the region.
