Severe Storms Cause Flooding and Road Closures in Milwaukee
Heavy rainfall from severe storms led to significant flooding in Milwaukee, resulting in road closures and stranded vehicles.
Severe storms swept through Milwaukee on Wednesday night, bringing heavy rainfall that caused significant flooding across the city. The Milwaukee County Sheriff's Office reported that southbound Interstate 43 was closed near the Mitchell Interchange due to high water levels, with some sections beginning to reopen by late evening. A northbound closure was also anticipated.
Marquette University police issued warnings about flooding on campus and in surrounding areas. Social media posts depicted leaks in the roof of American Family Field during a Brewers baseball game, and local media reported flooding along major routes servicing the stadium.
The National Weather Service had placed Milwaukee under a flash flood warning from just after 8 p.m. to 11 p.m., cautioning that heavy rain could accumulate up to two inches within a few hours. These storms are part of a series of severe weather events affecting the Midwest, including tornadoes and hail, as storm systems continue to move across the region.
In related incidents, a tornado touched down in Miami County, Kansas, damaging 100 buildings and rendering at least half uninhabitable. In Michigan, emergency officials monitored rising waters at several dams after a levee breach near Cheboygan prompted evacuations.
Forecasts indicate a temporary reprieve for the Midwest on Thursday, with the most severe storms expected to shift into the Northeast. However, by Friday, storms are projected to return, with parts of Missouri, Iowa, Wisconsin, Illinois, Kansas, and Oklahoma likely to experience hazardous weather conditions.
