Summary

Texas Democrat James Talarico has reported a staggering $27 million in first-quarter fundraising, raising concerns about the influence of national liberal donors and the left’s efforts to flip Texas.

Texas Democratic Senate candidate James Talarico has reported raising over $27 million in the first quarter of 2026, a figure his campaign touts as the largest ever for a U.S. Senate candidate in the first quarter of an election year. This massive sum, driven by left-wing donors eager to turn Texas blue, highlights the growing influence of out-of-state and progressive money in Texas politics.

Talarico, a state representative and Presbyterian seminarian with a record of supporting leftist policies, secured the Democratic nomination in March after defeating U.S. Representative Jasmine Crockett. His campaign claims $10 million of the total was raised after the March 3 primary, as liberal activists poured money into his campaign.

This fundraising windfall puts Talarico in a strong position as he prepares to challenge the winner of the Republican primary runoff between incumbent Senator John Cornyn and Attorney General Ken Paxton, scheduled for May 26. Cornyn’s campaign, relying on support from Texans and traditional donors, reported nearly $9 million raised in the same quarter, while Paxton has not yet released his fundraising numbers.

Talarico’s campaign manager, Seth Krasne, underscored the importance of this financial backing, stating, “Winning in Texas will require unprecedented resources. This grassroots fundraising haul puts our movement in a strong position to spread our message in some of the most expensive media markets in the country.”

Talarico’s fundraising dwarfs previous Democratic efforts, surpassing Beto O’Rourke’s 2018 first-quarter total of $6.7 million. The campaign boasts contributions from over 540,000 individual donors across 246 of Texas’ 254 counties, but questions remain about how much of this support comes from outside Texas and from radical left-wing groups.

As Democrats ramp up their efforts to seize control of the Senate, Talarico’s fundraising is a clear sign of the left’s determination to impose their agenda on Texas and undermine conservative values at the statewide level.
