One in Four Americans Use AI for Health Information, Gallup Poll Finds

Summary

A recent Gallup poll reveals that 25% of U.S. adults have used AI tools for health information, with many seeking quick answers or supplementing medical consultations.

A recent Gallup poll indicates that 25% of U.S. adults have utilized artificial intelligence tools or chatbots for health-related information or advice. Among these users, 59% reported using AI to research health questions before visiting a doctor, and 56% did so after a consultation. The primary motivations include the desire for quick answers and additional information.

The survey also highlights that younger adults and those with lower incomes are more inclined to use AI for health information, often due to challenges in accessing or affording traditional healthcare services. Notably, 14% of recent AI health information users reported skipping a healthcare provider visit based on the advice received from AI tools.

Despite the growing reliance on AI for health advice, trust in the accuracy of such information remains mixed. Only 4% of users strongly trust AI-generated health information, while 33% express distrust. Concerns about privacy and data security also persist among users.

Healthcare professionals emphasize that while AI can serve as a supplementary resource, it should not replace professional medical advice. Dr. Bobby Mukkamala, president of the American Medical Association, stated, "It is an assistant but not an expert, and that's why physicians need to be involved in that care."
