Trump Criticizes Pope Leo XIV Amid Iran Conflict and AI Image Controversy
President Donald Trump has intensified his criticism of Pope Leo XIV over the pontiff's stance on the Iran conflict, while also facing backlash for posting an AI-generated image depicting himself in a Christ-like manner.
President Donald Trump has escalated his criticism of Pope Leo XIV, questioning the pontiff's awareness of Iran's internal repression. In a recent Truth Social post, Trump stated, "Will someone please tell Pope Leo that Iran has killed at least 42,000 innocent, completely unarmed, protesters in the last two months, and that for Iran to have a Nuclear Bomb is absolutely unacceptable." This follows earlier remarks where Trump labeled the pope as "weak on crime" and "terrible for foreign policy," accusing him of aligning with the "Radical Left."
Pope Leo XIV has consistently advocated for peace and dialogue concerning the Iran conflict. Addressing reporters, he emphasized, "I will continue to speak out loudly against war, looking to promote peace, promoting dialogue and multilateral relationships among the states to look for just solutions to problems."
In a separate incident, Trump shared an AI-generated image on Truth Social depicting himself in a Christ-like pose, which drew swift condemnation from religious leaders and political figures. The Vatican described the imagery as "deeply disrespectful." Conservative commentator Megan Basham expressed her dismay, stating, "I don't know if the President thought he was being funny or if he is under the influence of some substance or what possible explanation he could have for this OUTRAGEOUS blasphemy."
Trump later deleted the image, claiming it was intended to portray him as a doctor. He told reporters, "I did post it, and I thought it was me as a doctor, and had to do with Red Cross, as a Red Cross worker there, which we support."
The ongoing exchanges highlight the deepening rift between the U.S. administration and the Vatican over approaches to international conflicts and the use of religious symbolism in political discourse.
