Hungary's Prime Minister Viktor Orbán concedes defeat to opposition leader Péter Magyar, ending a 16-year tenure.

Hungary's Prime Minister Viktor Orbán has conceded defeat after 16 years in power, following a decisive victory by opposition leader Péter Magyar in the parliamentary elections held on April 12, 2026. Magyar's Tisza party secured 138 out of 199 seats, achieving a two-thirds supermajority, while Orbán's Fidesz party obtained 55 seats. Voter turnout reached a record 77.8%, reflecting widespread public desire for change.

Magyar, a former Fidesz member who founded the Tisza party in 2024, campaigned on restoring democratic norms and addressing corruption. His victory is seen as a significant shift in Hungarian politics and a move towards closer alignment with the European Union.

International leaders have welcomed the election results. French President Emmanuel Macron stated, "France salutes a victory of democratic participation, of the Hungarian people's attachment to the values of the European Union, and for Hungary in Europe." Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky congratulated Magyar, emphasizing the importance of a constructive approach and expressing readiness to advance cooperation with Hungary.

The election outcome also marks a setback for U.S. Vice President JD Vance, who had traveled to Hungary days before the election to support Orbán's campaign. Vance's visit underscored the close ties between the Trump administration and Orbán's government.

Orbán acknowledged the election results, stating, "The responsibility for and the opportunity to govern were not given to us."

Magyar's victory is expected to have significant implications for Hungary's domestic policies and its role within the European Union, signaling a potential shift away from the nationalist policies that characterized Orbán's tenure.
