Artemis II Mission Advances Understanding of Space Travel's Impact on Human Health

NASA's Artemis II mission is pioneering research into the effects of deep space travel on human health by utilizing organ-on-a-chip technology. These devices, approximately the size of a USB drive, contain bone marrow tissue derived from the mission's astronauts—Reid Wiseman, Victor Glover, Christina Koch, and Jeremy Hansen. The study, known as AVATAR (A Virtual Astronaut Tissue Analog Response), aims to simulate how deep space stressors, including increased radiation and microgravity, impact human organs.

Lisa Carnell, Director of NASA’s Biological and Physical Sciences Division, emphasized the novelty of this approach: "We’ve never done this before." By focusing on bone marrow, researchers expect to gather data on the crew’s immune responses to deep space travel and associated higher radiation levels. These insights could lead to individualized treatments, facilitating longer missions deeper into space.

The AVATAR investigation is a collaboration between NASA, government agencies, and industry partners, leveraging commercial expertise to gain a deeper understanding of human biology and disease. This research could accelerate innovations in personalized healthcare, both for astronauts in space and patients on Earth.

In addition to the AVATAR study, Artemis II astronauts are participating in other health-focused research. They are wearing wrist monitors to track movement and sleep patterns, collecting saliva samples to monitor immune system changes, and undergoing tests to assess balance and cognitive function. These comprehensive studies aim to inform future missions by providing a detailed understanding of how deep space travel affects the human body and mind.

The Artemis II mission represents a significant step in NASA's efforts to ensure astronaut safety and health during extended space exploration, laying the groundwork for future missions to the Moon, Mars, and beyond.
