Experts Question U.S. Claims of Total Victory in Iran Conflict
While U.S. officials declare complete victory in Iran, analysts highlight significant strategic challenges and ongoing uncertainties.
Following the announcement of a two-week ceasefire in the conflict with Iran, President Donald Trump and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth have declared the United States' military operations a complete success. President Trump stated that the U.S. had "already met and exceeded all military objectives," describing the outcome as a "total and complete victory. 100%. No question about it." Similarly, Defense Secretary Hegseth characterized "Operation Epic Fury" as a "historic and overwhelming victory on the battlefield," asserting that the operation had "decimated Iran's military and rendered it combat-ineffective for years to come."
Despite these declarations, experts caution that labeling the outcome as a "total victory" may overlook significant strategic challenges. While U.S. and Israeli forces have achieved substantial battlefield successes, including the near elimination of Iran's naval, air force, and air defense systems, Iran's regime remains in power and has gained unprecedented control over the Strait of Hormuz, a critical passage for global oil shipments. Additionally, Iran retains stocks of highly enriched uranium, raising concerns about its nuclear capabilities.
Aaron David Miller, a senior fellow at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, remarked, "If the war stopped tomorrow, this constitutes a historic strategic defeat for the U.S., especially when this was a war of choice." The conflict has also resulted in the deaths of 13 U.S. military personnel and injuries to hundreds more, alongside significant civilian casualties in Iran.
The Trump administration has cited various objectives for initiating the conflict, including supporting the Iranian people, preventing Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon, and pursuing regime change. However, it remains unclear whether the U.S. has secured commitments from Iran to achieve these goals. The ceasefire's terms and Iran's future actions will be critical in determining the long-term outcomes of the conflict.
