US to Implement Automatic Military Draft Registration by December
The United States will begin automatically registering eligible men for the military draft by December, shifting from the current self-registration system.
The United States is set to implement automatic registration for the military draft by December, transitioning from the existing self-registration process. This change, mandated by the National Defense Authorization Act signed into law on December 18, 2025, requires the Selective Service System (SSS) to integrate with federal data sources to register eligible men aged 18 to 25.
The SSS submitted a proposed rule to the Office of Information and Regulatory Affairs on March 30 to facilitate this transition. The agency's website indicates that this statutory change transfers the responsibility for registration from individuals to the SSS, aiming to streamline the process and improve compliance.
Currently, most men between 18 and 25 are required to register with the SSS, with non-compliance potentially leading to penalties such as ineligibility for federal student aid and employment. The shift to automatic registration is intended to enhance efficiency and ensure a more comprehensive database of potential draftees.
The last U.S. military draft occurred in 1973 during the Vietnam War. While the move to automatic registration has raised concerns about the possibility of reinstating conscription, the SSS emphasizes that this change does not equate to activating a draft, which would require separate authorization from Congress and the President.
