Sean 'Diddy' Combs Appeals Conviction and Sentence in Federal Court
Sean 'Diddy' Combs' legal team argues for overturning his conviction and reducing his 50-month prison sentence, citing First Amendment protections and alleged judicial overreach.
On April 9, 2026, attorneys for Sean "Diddy" Combs appeared before the 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Manhattan to challenge his conviction and 50-month prison sentence for prostitution-related offenses under the federal Mann Act. Combs, currently incarcerated at the Federal Correctional Institution in Fort Dix, New Jersey, did not attend the hearing.
The defense contends that the trial judge imposed an excessively harsh sentence by considering allegations of sex trafficking and racketeering, charges for which Combs was acquitted. Defense attorney Alexandra Shapiro argued that Combs received "the most prison time ever given someone convicted of the same charges with a similar criminal history."
Prosecutors maintain that the sentence aligns with federal guidelines and reflects Combs' conduct. They argue that the recordings of sexual encounters orchestrated by Combs do not constitute protected speech under the First Amendment.
The appellate judges acknowledged the complexity of the case, with Circuit Judge William J. Nardini describing it as "exceptionally difficult" and raising questions of first impression for federal courts. The court has not yet issued a ruling on the appeal.
