Rex Heuermann Pleads Guilty to Gilgo Beach Murders, Admits to Eighth Killing

Summary

Long Island architect Rex Heuermann has pleaded guilty to the murders of seven women and admitted to an eighth, concluding a case that spanned over a decade.

Rex Heuermann, a 62-year-old architect from Long Island, pleaded guilty on Wednesday to the murders of seven women and admitted to an eighth killing, bringing closure to the long-standing Gilgo Beach serial killings case.

In a Suffolk County courtroom, Heuermann confessed to the murders of Melissa Barthelemy, Maureen Brainard-Barnes, Megan Waterman, Amber Lynn Costello, Valerie Mack, Jessica Taylor, and Sandra Costilla. He also admitted to killing Karen Vergata in 1996, though he was not formally charged in her death.

The investigation began in 2010 when police discovered multiple human remains along Ocean Parkway near Gilgo Beach, leading to the identification of several victims, many of whom were sex workers. The case remained unsolved for years until a task force formed in 2022 linked Heuermann to the crimes through vehicle registration records and DNA evidence obtained from discarded items.

Heuermann is expected to receive life imprisonment without the possibility of parole during his sentencing in June. His ex-wife and daughter, who were not involved in the crimes, have requested privacy during this time.
