Rex Heuermann Expected to Plead Guilty in Gilgo Beach Serial Killings
Rex Heuermann, accused of murdering seven women over 17 years, is anticipated to plead guilty, potentially concluding the long-standing Gilgo Beach murder case.
Rex Heuermann, a 62-year-old former architect from Long Island, is expected to plead guilty on Wednesday to the murders of seven women over a 17-year period. This development could bring closure to the Gilgo Beach serial killings case, which has remained unresolved for over a decade.
Heuermann was arrested in July 2023 and initially pleaded not guilty to the charges. The victims, many of whom were sex workers, were found along Long Island's South Shore between 1993 and 2010. The case garnered significant public attention due to the prolonged investigation and the nature of the crimes.
Investigators identified Heuermann as a suspect in 2022 through vehicle registration data and cellphone records. DNA evidence, including a sample obtained from a discarded pizza crust, linked him to one of the victims. A search of his residence revealed a cache of 279 weapons and digital files described as a "blueprint" for the killings.
Suffolk County District Attorney Ray Tierney has scheduled a news conference for Wednesday afternoon, following the court hearing. He will be joined by members of the victims' families and the Gilgo Beach Homicide Investigation Task Force, which played a crucial role in solving the case.
Heuermann's attorney and the Suffolk County District Attorney's Office have not immediately responded to requests for comment.
