Delta Air Lines has announced an increase in checked baggage fees for domestic and select short-haul international flights, citing escalating jet fuel prices due to Middle East tensions.
Effective for tickets purchased on or after April 8, the fee for the first checked bag will rise by $10 to $45, and the second checked bag will also increase by $10 to $55. The fee for a third checked bag will see a $50 hike, bringing the total to $200.
A Delta spokesperson stated that these adjustments are part of the airline's ongoing review of pricing and reflect the impact of evolving global conditions and industry dynamics.
This marks Delta's first increase in domestic baggage fees in two years and follows similar moves by United Airlines and JetBlue Airways.
The airline industry is facing higher operating costs due to a surge in jet fuel prices, which have risen from approximately $85 to $90 per barrel to around $209 per barrel globally, following disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz.
Delta's baggage fee changes do not affect long-haul international routes. Complimentary checked baggage benefits for premium cabin passengers, active-duty military personnel, eligible co-branded credit card holders, and certain loyalty program members will remain unchanged.
